I’d like to thank the troop committee for always being there for our Scouts and supporting Troop 400! Let’s keep it going!
Collectively— It’s great to be a Scout! Our month starts with a bang…the canoe campout on the Blackwater River, 15-16 May! We put in at Peaden Bridge, and floated several hours until we found a nice sandbar just south of Cotton Bridge. The troop “flotilla” consisted of 12 canoes, several kayaks, 19 Scouts, and 8 adults! Saw snakes in the river, hawks in the skies, and meat on the grill (at least the adults had meat on the grill!)! On Sunday, we had a quick church service, packed up, and left the river at Bryant Bridge before the thunderstorms got worse. MANY THANKS to Billy Pittman for intercepting us on the river and alerting Jim and crew to pick us up at Bryant Bridge early. AND mucho thanks to the adults who went on the trip--Lewe, Amanda (newest committee member), Sam, Patrick, Mike, Adrienne, and Gil. We could not have had such a fantastic weekend without the help, support, and leadership from this great group of adults and leaders who drove us on Saturday!
The troop completed a key service project for our sponsoring organization, Woodbine United Methodist Church, by collecting food for the spring food drive from 17-24 May. Our patrols competed to see who could bring in the most non-perishable items, and the winner is….the Smelley Midgets patrol with 850 items…WOW! I believe that is a new Troop 400 record! Each member of the patrol will receive a special prize (sleeping bag, tent, or collectable “wheat-back” penny roll) for their hard work. Overall, the troop collected over 1200 items…GREAT JOB!
On 29 May, we had 22 Scouts and adults participate in the annual Memorial Day Flag Emplacement event at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola NAS. There were hundreds of volunteers to place the thousands of U.S. flags on each gravesite, and it was a special activity for all who attended. Afterwards, we took 14 adults and Scouts on the Pensacola NAS Historic Trails, 10-mile hike! Everyone made it! Thanks to Mike, Adrienne, and Chris for hiking, and to Danny for driving the troop van as logistics support!
Ryan M passed his Second Class BOR! Adam P passed his Eagle BOR at WUMC on 13 May. Seth J will have his Eagle BOR at WUMC on 14 June, 6:30pm. Douglas Wilson finished his Eagle application, and is ready for committee review. Dalton D, Mike K, and Bear W (who is moving) are working on their Eagle application. Cameron B has an Eagle project ready to present to the committee; he has signatures from the Immanuel Baptist Church. Nathaniel M and Adam P's Eagle awards were approved by national BSA, and received at the Gulf Coast Council office (7 June). Both Ryan F and Nathaniel M are new junior assistant scoutmasters (JASM)…CONGRATULATIONS!
